Quotes about the duty of Christians to be involved in politics:

“If Christians should vote their duty to God at the polls, they would carry every election, and do it with ease…Mark Twain, Collier’s Sept. 2, 1905.

“Churches must not act in a partisan way, but they should equip and send people into the political process at all levels who will represent the interests of the Kingdom of God.”

Harry S. Stout, Jonathan Edwards Professor of American Christianity at Yale University.

“It is not the presence of evil people doing evil things that provokes God’s wrath.  It is when good people fail to do good things.  If God’s people will join the cause of righteousness, bringing salt and light to society, God will surely bless their efforts, even though they may be vastly outnumbered.”   Tom Minnery, Focus on the Family, 12/98.

“American Christians have been handed the priceless gifts of freedom, purchased by the sacrifice of our forefathers.  Let’s pay attention to what’s going on in our government today.  Let’s get involved and work for just laws.  Let’s be salt and light in every area of life—including politics.”

Tim Wildmon, AFA president, March 2010 AFA Journal

“The Christians of Germany learned only too late that God’s people in Christ cannot disengage from the culture in which they live…..The time has come for us to pay heed to the Word of the Lord God Almighty, and be what He has placed us here to be—the stinging salt that stops the decay of death, the shining light that dispels the darkness of doubt and despair, the gleaming city set high upon a hill that shines as a beacon light of hope and life to this nation and every nation.”

Dr. Laurence White, Reclaiming America for Christ conference, 1999

“Christians have a duty to introduce biblical morality into the culture in which they live—to bring the influence of Christ into every area of society by sprinkling salt and shining light into a world darkened by sin.”    Dr. D. James Kennedy, June 2010,( reprint from a previous sermon)

“We must recognize that this country is close to being lost because Bible-believing Christians who have said they know that the final reality is this infinite personal God who is the Creator, have done nothing about it as the consensus has changed.  There has been a vast silence.”

Francis Schaeffer, Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church, 1982

How Christians Can Be Involved In Politics:  Ethic and Religious Liberty Commission 1/6/10

*Register and vote: It is common for elections to be decided by 10 to 20% of eligible voters

*Do your homework: Candidate’s voting record, the issues, how are decisions made?

*Establish Priorities: Pick an issue where your involvement can make a difference

*Communicate with Decision Makers: Letters, emails, faxes, visits to home offices

*Get involved in a Political Party: Those active in a party shape the options for issues

*Work in an Election: Volunteer, contribute, make calls, pass our literature, put up signs

*Influence Public Policy: Join with others concerned with issues you care about.
